Michael Saunders & Co. Presents the Mid-Century Modern Gem of the “Lu Andrews III Residence” by Ralph Twitchell of the Sarasota School of Architecture

The Michael Saunders & Company real estate brokerage is thrilled to present for sale the quintessential, mid-century modern “Lu Andrews III” home, a gem of the Sarasota School of Architecture designed by the renowned Ralph Twitchell. This jewel of Sarasota architecture history and its grounds have been thoughtfully restored to provide a private haven just minutes from the beaches and downtown Sarasota.

Nestled on a private .31-acre lot with a serene pond view, 1695 Lowe Dr. is true to Twitchell’s vision. The home has an artful interplay of light, space and natural elements, with glass, specialized block and terrazzo floors that provide an indoor/outdoor connection with the surrounding environment.

“So rarely does a gem of Sarasota’s design history come to be available,” said Maria Beck, who is co-listing the property with Jalina Beck, both with Michael Saunders & Co. “This space is a private retreat to enjoy the lush, natural Florida setting and tranquil pond, all while preserving the vision that helped create the Sarasota School of Architecture.”

Offered at $1,000,000, the “Lu Andrews III” home is one of the few Sarasota School of Architecture homes that is still in its true form and has not been dramatically changed. The interior features a cozy wood-burning fireplace that serves as the focal point of a spacious, light-filled living room. Sliding glass doors lead to a screened lanai with sunken, built in planters. Skylights flood the home with natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere. Original terrazzo flooring, stainless steel counters and built-in cabinetry reflect the craftsmanship of the era and complement the modern aesthetic

The 1959 home is well preserved, and the original cabinetry, tile and other features are well cared for. The design provides a wonderful example of how the Sarasota School developed into an iconic style. Twitchell originally came to Sarasota in 1925 to assist the New York architect Dwight James Baum through the construction of John Ringling’s waterfront Ca d’Zan mansion in Sarasota. Later, creating his own architecture and construction firm, Twitchell is renowned as the father of the Sarasota Modernist architects, later known as the Sarasota School. (See further details at US Modernist here).

Working in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and beyond, Twitchell was integral to the development of this Sarasota style – a post-war movement known for adapting themes from Frank Lloyd-Wright and Le Corbusier for the Florida environment, featuring open, flowing layouts, frequent use of indoor/outdoor spaces and cantilevered roofs to provide shade and shelter from the weather. The name “Lu Andrews III,” has a personal connection to Twitchell. Lu was Twitchell’s secretary, and this is the third home he designed for her.

Located just minutes from downtown Sarasota, renowned beaches and cultural destinations of Sarasota’s vibrant arts scene, this home offers the perfect balance of private retreat with accessibility – a rare opportunity to live within a piece of Sarasota’s architectural heritage.
